Empowering Rural Livelihoods

Lac Cultivation Initiative in Purulia

Reviving traditional practices with modern techniques for sustainable rural development

About the Initiative

As part of our ongoing commitment to rural development and sustainable economic upliftment, S&D Group is proud to launch a transformative initiative in the heart of West Bengal — Lac Cultivation in Purulia. This project aims to rejuvenate traditional lac farming practices, create employment opportunities, and empower tribal and marginal farmers through skill development, modern techniques, and robust market linkages.

What is Lac?

Lac is a natural, resinous substance secreted by a tiny insect known as Kerría lacca, which thrives on the twigs of specific host trees like Kusum (Schleichera oleosa), Palash (Butea monosperma), and Ber (Zizyphus mauritiana).

These insects feed on the sap of the trees and secrete a resinous covering that hardens into a protective coating. This resin, once collected and processed, becomes shellac, a valuable bio-product used in:

  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Food coatings
  • Cosmetics
  • Wood finishing
  • Jewelry polish
  • Electrical insulation
  • Varnishes and paints

Why is Lac Important?

Eco-friendly

A sustainable alternative to synthetic resins that is completely biodegradable.

Export Potential

India is the largest producer and exporter of lac in the world.

Livelihood Source

Especially important for tribal and marginal farmers in forested areas like Purulia.

Industrial Raw Material

Used across several industries from food to electronics.

Project At a Glance

Location: Purulia, West Bengal

Target Beneficiaries: Tribal and marginal farmers, women, youth

Duration: Ongoing

Key Objectives

  • Revive traditional lac farming practices
  • Create sustainable employment opportunities
  • Empower women and youth through skill development
  • Establish market linkages for lac products
  • Promote eco-friendly agricultural practices

Types of Lac Insects

India recognizes two main strains:

  • Rangeeni - Thrives mostly on Palash and Ber trees, produces deep-colored lac.
  • Kusumi - Found on Kusum trees, yields lighter and premium quality lac.

Each strain gives two crops per year, with the seasons known by Hindi names like Katki, Baisakhi, Aghani, and Jethwi.

Key Components of the Project

This initiative is structured around five integrated pillars that ensure sustainability, inclusivity, and scalability

Skill Development & Training

Intensive training programs for farmers, women, and youth on:

  • Scientific methods of lac cultivation
  • Host tree selection and care (Palash, Kusum, Ber)
  • Natural pest control and crop cycles
  • Post-harvest handling, drying, and grading
  • Capacity-building workshops with experts from ICAR, MSME, and forest departments
  • Creation of model demonstration plots and learning centers in each block

Cluster-Based Approach

  • Formation of +50 lac cultivation clusters across 20 blocks of Purulia
  • Each cluster to include 150-100 farmers, organized into SHGs/cooperatives
  • Local cluster heads and coordinators to facilitate training, monitoring, and market linkages
  • Strong governance framework with regular audits and progress reviews

Sustainable Agriculture Practices

  • Promotion of agroforestry models integrating lac host trees with other crops for dual income
  • Focus on organic cultivation, natural pest repellents, and non-chemical inoculation
  • Conservation of lac insect biodiversity and preservation of indigenous strains like Rangeeni and Kusumi
  • Integration with MGNREGA and Forest Rights Act beneficiaries for land and labor support

Lac Processing Infrastructure

  • Revival and modernization of +25 defunct lac units in Balarampur, Jhalda, and Bandwan
  • Establishment of new processing units with machinery for:
    • Stick lac cleaning and crushing
    • Seedlac filtration and purification
    • Shellac flake and button formation
  • Infrastructure support for grading, packing, and cold storage facilities
  • Partnership with shellac industry players, researchers, and engineering colleges for innovation

Marketing, Branding & Export Linkages

  • Development of "Manbhum Lac" as a geo-tagged, organic-certified premium brand
  • Marketing support through:
    • State MSME expos
    • Digital and social media campaigns
    • Rural fairs and international trade expos
  • Tie-ups with e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and niche handicraft markets
  • Export facilitation through APEDA, SHEFEXIL, and international trade agents

Reviving Roots, Empowering Rural India

In a powerful step toward sustainable development, S&D Group proudly launches its newest initiative — the Lac Cultivation Project in Purulia. This project not only revives an ancient industry rooted deep in Indian heritage, but also empowers thousands of rural and tribal families through eco-friendly income generation.

By blending traditional wisdom with scientific practices, we aim to restore Purulia's legacy as a premier lac-producing region, while building a strong rural economy driven by skill, sustainability, and self-reliance.
